I’m passionate about helping young people realize their potential.
From September to June, I pursue this passion through my work teaching in the Waterloo Region District School Board since 2020, at the Waterloo Collegiate Institute site since 2024. I have enjoyed teaching subjects and streams as eclectic as my music tastes*: French Core, Extended, and Immersion; History for mainstream, ESL, and FSL students; learning in-person, hybrid, and online both synchronously and asynchronously; and a smattering of Student Success and Leadership to boot. Most recently, I have been delighted to settle into a niche as one of WCI's Teacher Librarians, while maintaining my French involvement through certication as a DELF examiner/corrector. Outside of classes, I have recently served as a coach for Cross Country and the vocal director of our school musical. But if you ask my students, I am mostly notorious for having an absurd amount of energy at 8:10am and a song for literally every grammar tense.
For many years, my educational work also extended to a variety of summer programming. I served for four years as a camp counsellor with Tim Hortons Foundation Camps, and another six in a variety of roles with Shad Canada. Most recently, as Program Manager at Shad Mount Allison, I helped organize the program's finances and logistics from behind-the-scenes; all the while, I continued to prioritize day-to-day community building through leading small mealtime conversations and full-group events alike. (Don't tell anyone, but I may have also been the man behind our secret "celebrity" campfire host...) The Shad program is what inspired me to become an educator, and camp work is what solidified that inspiration into a career; while I am currently taking some well-needed rest in my summers, it has been an immense pleasure and delight to pay my inspiration forward.
Life as an educator has been busy, but I’m grateful to make time for my other passions. Music plays an especially large role—I have enjoyed performing with the Age of Majority Singers since 2023, in addition to occasionally writing and performing music on my own. On my Saturdays off, I can be found hiking through the Waterloo region, curling up with a book or game, or waxing poetic about brunch/mixtapes/ice cream to friends near and far.
After all, life’s short — you’ve got to be loud and proud!
* Not an exaggeration; my playlists routinely combine music from 70's rock groups, Nintendo games, and Sabrina Carpenter.
